Great to hear, Clancy. Looking forward to it.

Always enjoy your thoughts on process, even if you don't ;)

I will buy your book and read it, Clancy. And have fun at your Big Life Event! Will she wear white? Will you wear a tuxedo?

Thanks Ana. Actually, I will be barechested and wearing only a bow tie.

Sounds elegant!

I’m saving this post so I can come back and read it later, but I got so excited by the Father John Misty reference I had to comment. Hell yeah.

Really great ideas across the board. I can’t wait for the novel, and I’m sure it will be worth AT LEAST one paid subscriber (likely dozens). I also like that you’ll be publishing it all at once but sending it out weekly, because I like mixing it up. I don’t mind waiting a week between chapters, but sometimes I get the urge to binge. It’ll be nice to have both options. I’m also curious what you’ve thought about the visuals, how the novel will look in the app. I know, I’m weird like that. But I’m excited. Truly.

Thanks Andrei! I think it will be a pretty simple setup, it we’ll see. it’s going to be a lot of work to set up every chapter at once. Glad you’re excited!

Awesome news, Clancy! And this: “While I am a fast writer, I am a very slow receiver of inspiration,” is the best way I’ve seen it put about opposite-me. Thanks for articulating it so well! The two of us could be complementary lol.

Thanks Silvio. I don’t think the world could handle our combined powers.

First, looking forward to that folder called NovelFinallyFinalFINALImeanitThisTime.

Second, releasing the whole novel at once but everyone still gets emailed a chapter a week? That’s super-intriguing. I have at least two readers who have said they’ll wait until the novel is finished releasing before they’ll read it again. Right now, I am reminding everyone to binge read before book 2 starts. But if I wholly release book 2 … it does feel a bit weird (it’s okay I am now talking to myself) to share the chapter via email again every week but I don’t know that it’s really a whole lot different to how I’m doing it now. Wondering how it will affect the “open” rate…

Thanks for the feedback Leanne! To be honest, I don't really worry about 'open' rate at all.

I hear that. I think I was temporarily seduced by the numbers. Returning to sanity …. Or the nearest approximation.

Haha trust me, I worry about a lot of numbers. but for some reason not open rates

Congrats on the Major Life Event AND the novel. Loving your concept of how to release. (I often hold off on reading a serial until more is available—because one episode/chapter is *never* enough.) Also, I’ve yet to turn on paid subscriptions because I haven’t decided how I want to paywall my writing… you’ve given me something to think about! Thank you. And good luck! Looking forward to reading your novel.

I'm glad I gave you food for thought! Yeah, I hear you on the "one chapter is never enough" thing. I'm pretty nervous about the release, so glad people seem to be positive on it.

Thanks for reading.

Thank you Justin! When are you gonna get into the long-form writing game??

Expand full comment

I’m honestly not sure, but your plan sounds awesome! We’ve taken similar paths with the long-form game. I wrote my first novel around a decade ago, and my second during the first few months of the pandemic. I don’t feel confident enough in either work to share at the moment, but perhaps with a rewrite…

I have a novel WIP that I’ve been chipping away at over the past nine months. I haven’t eclipsed 20,000 words yet, but the progress has been steady. I’m having fun finding my way through it. One of these years I’ll finish it and figure out what to do with it. 🤣

Congrats again on both fronts!! 🥂

Thanks! That’s awesome to hear about the WIPs. Rewriting mine with Substack experience has been a big confidence booster for me.

Congratulations on the “major life event”! A novel is the undertaking of undertakings, but you’ve got at least one guaranteed sale right here.

Thanks Mills, it's about time I stop freeloading and actually make Substack some money!

Yay! my life has been bereft of PNP content and will now, once more, find purpose. Cant wait to see what you've been writing!

Thanks Molly and sorry about that. Hopefully I can fit a couple of short stories in there before novel release!
